The Franco-American telecommunications equipment maker, which has a presence in Ottawa, posted net profit of C398 million (US$526 million) in the January to March quarter, compared to a C10 million loss a year earlier.
The Paris-based company says the capital gain on its sale of Genesys in February to private equity investor Permira Advisers took it into the black for the quarter.
In a statement Thursday Alcatel-Lucent said underlying profitability was hammered by a double-digit decline in sales of optics and wireless equipment, as well as a steep drop in sales in North America.
