It's what's inside that matters

[in]tempo design studio creates spaces that inspire

When [in]tempo design studio renovated a century old building to serve as its new office two years ago, it used its own experience as a proof of concept for sustainable commercial renovation.

“We made a conscious decision to walk the talk by buying a place we would have to renovate,” said [in]tempo Partner Marianne Dupont. “It put us in the position of being able to promote sustainable renovation practices that we had tested for ourselves.”

The commercial interior design consultancy cut construction costs in half by recycling and repurposing materials and building finishes at every turn. Walls were removed to bring in more natural light and foster a more creative and dynamic office environment. The two upper floors were renovated into a handsome bachelor unit and functional living space for the owners, which eliminated commuting and the need for one vehicle. High-efficiency lighting and other energy-saving measures were implemented, combined with finishing choices that produce less waste, such as reusable carpet tiles.

It is this same approach to sustainable, and liveable, design which [in]tempo brings to bear for its corporate, commercial, and healthcare clients in the private and public sectors.

[in]tempo takes a strategic, proactive approach with each client to determine at the outset of a project where costs savings can be realized, how corners can be cut by consolidating different stages of a project, and where engineering resources must be brought into the process to deal with the hidden surprises typical of existing buildings.

The [in]tempo team are Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals, which means they have been certified to the highest industry standards for sustainable building design. In fact, the renovation of [in]tempo’s new office met criteria for LEED Silver, but the team decided to invest the cost of going through the certification process into additional sustainability initiatives.

“We have built our business by sitting beside our clients as a partner rather than as a third party,” said [in]tempo Partner Marcqus Laver. “They rely on us as a safety net and leader who will help them take a sustainable approach that makes sense, plan for the future and avoid some of the potholes that may be ahead of them.”

“For the design and fit up of our new office, I was looking for someone who could think outside of the box, was pleasant to work with, was bilingual and experienced with working in the Franco- Ontarian community. Marianne and the [in]tempo team came highly recommended and we were not disappointed. Time was a big factor for us and we had less of it than we thought. Marianne responded quickly to our needs, lined up quality people to do the work and ensured that the project met our deadlines. She takes pride in her work and is both artistic and practical in her approach.”

“[in]tempo worked with us on the design and fit-up of our new 10,000-square-foot office on Legget Drive. The [in]tempo team was very professional, responsive and looked past their component of the project – design – to act as the project leader and ensure the entire project came together seamlessly and within scope. They worked on our behalf with all of the trades and other professional services involved and helped us understand where and how we could use materials that were more environmentally friendly.”
