Welch LLP is gearing up for 2012 beach soccer tournament


Come out and enjoy a day of sun, sand and good-natured competition in support of the Bruyère Foundation with Welch LLP’s Second Annual Beach Soccer Tournament. “The tournament is great business networking and team building opportunity in an informal, family-friendly setting,” said Garth Steele, Tax Partner with Welch’s Ottawa office.

Welch, a full-service chartered accountancy founded in Ottawa more than 90 years ago, has made a long-term commitment to support Bruyère Foundation as its corporate charity of choice through the Welch Legacy Foundation.

“This tournament allows us to create a more focused impact on our community by supporting a charity which has touched many of our sta and their families in dierent ways,” said Steele. “We are proud to support Bruyère and the good work it does to help people through some of the most difficult times in their lives.” Bruyère Foundation is part of Bruyère Continuing Care, one of the largest healthcare organizations of its kind in Canada. It is a champion for aging Canadians and those requiring continuing care to help them remain as healthy and independent as possible through innovative and compassionate care, research, education and advocacy.

Last year’s tournament drew more than 250 participants, 24 teams and raised more than $27,000 for Bruyère. This year’s tournament, taking place on Sept. 15, is growing to accommodate at least 32 teams. The day will feature food and beverage sponsors, a beer tent, a silent auction, and a variety of prizes handed out by some of Ottawa’s most recognized community leaders. In addition, the tournament will include a catered lunch break to allow participants more time to mingle and network.

What is beach soccer?
Beach soccer is a fun alternative to volleyball and less physically demanding than conventional soccer. It is played on a field measuring 12 by 30 metres with a net comparable to a hockey net. Teams field four players and games are divided into 10-minute halves.

In this year’s tournament, teams will be divided into four categories depending on their skill and competitive levels, with prizes awarded in each category. Welch is hoping to also divide teams based on industry segment to foster some good-natured rivalry between competitors in the same industry -- such as law, banking, homebuilding and auto sales – and award a special cup to the winner in each industry.

“We entered last year’s tournament because we thought it was a great outdoor event at which to network, in support of a great cause,” said Jordan Bianconi, Sales Representative – Investment Properties at Colliers International. “You see a lot of the same faces downtown in suits on a day-to-day basis and it was good to let loose, have fun, and mingle outside of an office. Welch did a great job in setting up the tournament and we look forward to being a part of it again this year.”
