THE CHALLENGE:
Gil and Tina Wilson have purchased homes at two very different times for the Ottawa market. In the early 1990s they bought their first, a condo, when housing prices had contracted. In the early 2000s, when prices were at record highs, they upsized to a semi-detached home.

In both cases, the Wilsons were interested only in a very specific area of the city and they had what Gil refers to as an “extremely restricted budget.”

As a business owner, Gil is accustomed to dealing with real estate professionals. “I find that usually if you tell a real estate agency you are restricted to a very small area or price range, they will push you to loosen your criteria,” he said. “They want an easy one where they can shop you to the whole city.”

THE DIFFERENCE
But with both transactions, the Wilsons’ experience was quite different thanks to the efforts of Pina Alessi, real estate broker with RE/MAX Citywide Realty.

When Gil dismissed one option for their second home as a “dinky little cottage,” Pina insisted the Wilsons view the home and give it a chance. Because she had taken the time to develop a close relationship with the couple, and took the extra step to preview the home herself, she knew it was the right fit for them.

When the Wilsons were negotiating the offer on this property, the seller wanted to hold up the deal to give a family member time to decide if they wanted to purchase it. Pina made certain that the offer included a clause that would allow the Wilsons to back out of the deal if they found another home in the meantime.

“After a relationship of 20 years, I would never consider taking another agent,” said Gil.
