The announcement came after National Post chief executive Paul Godfrey finalized the purchase of Canwest Global Communications Corp. (TSX-V:CGS), of which the Citizen is a subsidiary.
At the time of the purchase he said the newly renamed PostMedia Network Inc. would have a digital-first strategy.
Mr. Orban will step down on Aug. 6 to "pursue new opportunities," a press release from the chain said, not specifying exactly where he will go next.
PostMedia stated the Citizen is in a good position for the future, with Mr. Orban successfully leading it through the 2008-09 recession that eventually forced the Canwest chain into restructuring.
The Citizen took 15 National Newspaper Association and seven Canadian Association of Journalist wins during Mr. Orban's time as publisher.
In one of Canwest's last financial statements, the media giant said it earned $16 million in its third quarter, with total revenue rising to $557 million – up three per cent from 2009.
Canwest's publishing division, which Mr. Godfrey is now taking over, generated revenues of $270 million.
