The chamber's executive director says especially with four elections in seven years, businesses that get money from the civil service are learning the hard way that they need to diversify their client base.
"Public servants who contract out the services just go on hold," Ms. Kelly says.
"It’s not just during the election, but after the election – they are so busy briefing new ministers, making new documents and waiting to get the government settled that it’s a good three to four months' period."
Consultants in particular should branch out to the agencies, like the National Capital Commission, to make sure money still flows during election periods, she adds.
Hotel managers, she says, must have enough slack in their budget to accommodate the lack of members of Parliament and other guests while candidates are campaigning.
