Twelve Ottawa-area businesses have been named to the PROFIT 200 list of the fastest-growing companies across the country, with two making it into the top 10 per cent of the rankings.

The listing, which was formerly known as the PROFIT 100 and Next 100, put IT consulting firm PrecisionERP in the ninth spot, with growth of 4,009 per cent between 2005 and 2010 and total annual revenues of $8.22 million last year. Online sales lead generation company adjump Media also placed high in the rankings, taking 18th place with five-year growth of 2,236 per cent and 2010 sales of $9.42 million.

PROFIT Magazine's rankings indicated that the number of local companies showing up among the top 100 fastest-growing doubled to eight from just four in the previous year. In 2010, the number of Ottawa-area firms listed on both the PROFIT 100 and Next 100 totalled nine.

Of those, five made a repeat appearance in this year's PROFIT 200 rankings - toy distributor PlaSmart, custom software solutions maker ThinkWrap, advanced battery manufacturer Panacis Medical, pharmaceutical research services provide Allphase Clinical Research Services, and remote database administration services firm The Pythian Group. Several of the companies listed were also named to OBJ's Fastest Growing Companies for 2011.

The top company overall was Toronto-based Mood Media Corp., which had a sizzling five-year growth figure of 72,384 per cent and 2010 revenues of US$144.97 million. The publicly traded firm, which provides background music, messaging and other media to stores, made headlines earlier this year when it bought competitor Muzak - a household name for elevator music - for US$345 million.

Waterloo-based BlackBerry maker Research In Motion held roughly the same position as it did in the previous year, falling a few spots to 68th from 62nd. The company - whose shares fell to a five-year low on Wednesday afternoon following a disappointing outlook from fellow handset maker Nokia - reported five-year growth of 864 per cent and annual revenues of US$2.07 billion in 2010.
