Carleton announced the latter gift on Friday as well as the formation of the Nicol Entrepreneurial Institute.
The entity will support students from all faculties desiring paid internships to help them learn the skills needed to begin their own companies.
Students will also be matched with a mentor to help the student get guidance during the internship period.
"I want the Nicol Entrepreneurial Institute to capture the imagination of students and reward their creativity and hard work," stated Mr. Nicol, founder of Tartan Homes and legal firm Nicol & Lauzier.
"Through this institute, I hope to see many outstanding companies get their start here at Carleton."
Mr. Nicol is also a backer of the Nicol Entrepreneurial Award, a national non-profit competition aiming to promote entrepreneurship at Canadian universities.
