Canada's language czar wants to hire contractors to pose as passengers in the country's largest airports and evaluate the level of bilingual services.

Topics :
Ottawa International Airport , Air Canada , Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages

The Ottawa International Airport is one of eight facilities that will be under the microscope.

Contractors will fly round-trip between two airports to observe Air Canada's self-serve kiosks, as well as its ground and in-flight services, according to a solicitation notice published to the online contracting site Merx. Security services and well as airport signage will also be anonymously examined.

The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages estimates the contract will be worth approximately $90,000 and says contractors performed similar work in 2009–10, 2010–11 and 2011–12.

A press release published separately says more than 1,500 anonymous observations will be conducted this fall.

Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous. While these "consultants" are flying around could we ask that they track how many passengers actually ask for service in French? I would bet these people will focus on the west where there is little to no French spoken, in fact, Chinese and Indian dialexcts will be more dominant but that will never get back to the Czar of Languages. Are we really going to continue to pay people more because they speak French when clearly this is an Ottawa to Quebec issue.

It just boggles the mind in this day and age that we have such a government agency such as the office of official languages. Nay, it boggles the mind that we pay for such drivel and now we are going to pay contractors who are not passengers to pose as passengers to make sure that they are serviced in either french or English. If I were in the legal business, I would call this a form or entrapment! Yes, ENTRAPMENT! Have this government ever been to any one of the airports. Yes, the security people servicing airports have their mother tongue as neither french or English and, where you get serviced in these airports, the first phrase out of other members of the servcies industry is french.. Yes french and not English. This offends Watchdog! Here is what Watchdog would do.. In light of the cost cutting measures the federal government is moving towards, get rid of this useless organizaion and this nonsense of bilingualism and put those ill gotten tax dollars towards the debt or better still towards a more useful cause. The relevance of the french language has diminished to a paultry 72 million people around the world or a ranking of 14th in the world order. Chinese or Mandarin, over a billion at number one. English, over 500 million or number two, Spanish, around 500 million at number three. This government for the past number of years has been forcing Canadians to speak a language that ranks 14th in the world. Yes, so what if it was part of Canada's past and present culture? So what if it causes the Quebec province to go through another referendum? Take away the power revenue from Hamilton River falls and give it back to the rightful owners..Newfoundland and Labrador. Quebec will not survive as a single entitiy they are not big enough. Stop the lunacy.
