The City of Ottawa has opened nominations for its first annual Ottawa Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards.

Recipients are expected to have made a meaningful contribution to the local economy through job creation, mentorship, or other means.

"The (awards) are an opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions of immigrant business people in our city, and to inspire and encourage other immigrants in Ottawa to consider starting or operating businesses here," the city stated in a press release.

Categories include:

- Youth business entrepreneurs (under 35 years old)

- Women entrepreneurs

- Innovation-oriented enterprises

- Social enterprises (with a social, environmental or cultural mandate as the primary concern of the business)

- Fast-growth enterprises

Nominations are open until Sept. 14. Recipients will be announced at the Ottawa Immigration Forum Oct. 1.

More information is available on the city's website.

As a Canadian, I find this very offensive that my tax dollars are being spent to fund this event. I would hope that others write in to voice their displeasure as well. There is no need to hold an event such as this. Take the hundred or so thousand dollars and spend it on something that benefits the community like oh say, the homeless, a shelter upgrade, etc.. You know, what our tax dollars are supposed be spent on. The City of Ottawa needs to be shuttered and put another City government in place that will create a balanced budget, and manager properly and resposibily. When will this lunacy stop..

Everybody in canada can be submit, since I believe that unless you're a native, we are pretty much all immigrants. So unlike WATCHDOG, as a Canadian, I did not forget where my ancestors came from!!!!!

It would be a good idea to check if your perception that this recognition cost was hundered thousand dollars is true. I doubt it. I would be surprised if it was anything more than a couple of thousand dollars. Considering the positive PR, It generates for both our local entrepreneurs and the City, this seems like a worthwhile investment.
