Montreal-based Duocom Canada Inc., which has an office in Ottawa, was acquired by AVI-SPL, an international communications company with 40 offices across the globe.

The acquisition – financial details of which were not disclosed – provides the parent company with Duocom’s offices in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.

Brad Fairholm, regional vice-president for the National Capital Region, said the transaction is “huge news” for the Canadian company.

“Everybody in our industry knows who AVI-SPL is,” he said. “They’re the Coca Cola of the industry. Now all of a sudden, that’s us.”

The local office’s seven employees will likely expand as a result of the acquisition, Mr. Fairholm said.

“Our ability to recruit and attract good talent from the industry changes overnight,” he said.

AVI-SPL is headquartered in Florida, but just expanded its operations into Europe with regional headquarters in the United Kingdom.

Duocom CEO Zoreena Abas will lead AVI-SPL’s eastern Canada offices including the Ottawa location on Industrial Avenue. Duocom’s offices add to the company’s existing Canadian presence in Calgary and Vancouver.

“AVI-SPL’s excellent reputation and breadth of services and expertise will allow us to reach our goal of becoming No. 1 in Canada,” Ms. Abas stated in a company release.

The company’s new operations in Canada and the U.K. will offer complete video communications solutions including design, integration and support.

Duocom was acquired by DuoLogik in 2011, an IT service provider from Richmond Hills, although the former company kept its name.

Founded in 1974, Duocom consists of two divisions including presentation products and systems integration.
