An upscale Sussex Street gym and spa was abruptly closed Friday as staff advised customers to do whatever they could to get their money back.

Soma Health and Fitness at 700 Sussex St.

Members of Soma Health and Fitness wrote on the gym’s Facebook page that they arrived to work out in the morning only to find no equipment inside.

Staff wrote a post to the gym’s official account warning people to try to get their money back.

“soma (sic) was emptied last night all staff was unaware of the situation I just suggest that you cancel all your direct withdrawal membership immediately,” the post read.

It was deleted later in the day.

No one was answering the phones at the gym on Friday morning. Voice messages and e-mails from OBJ were not returned.

Jessica Magnan, a yoga instructor with the gym for the past year, said she doesn’t know anything more about what happened beyond what she’s heard from colleagues.

“I thought maybe they’re closed for an event, or something,” she said. “I had no prior knowledge whatsoever ... I was shocked.”

She said she is still owed between $500 and $1,000 for the five to six classes a week she taught in January.

However she is scheduled to receive the payment next week and has received no indication the company won’t be paying her. Until then, she is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, she said.

“In about a week or so if nothing has happened then I will definitely be losing some money,” said Ms. Magnan.

A post on the Twitter account of Lawrence Ringwald, a trainer at the gym, said staff did not know that the business would be closing down.

“To my valued clients and friends. Soma abruptly closed without any notice. I remain loyal to you and will find a new facility to coach soon,” a post said.

Good thing I checked for the schedule just now. I have a gift certificate and would have gone there for nothing plus paid for parking.

Good morning. I am a concerned father whose daughter worked at Soma. She is owed 2 weeks pay. After talking to to a friend who is a lawyer, it was suggested that shego onto the Ministry of Labour site andsubmit a form. The form will allow their staff to investigate and hopefully helpto get her owed salary. The Ministry has a fund to handle such cases. No promises made and it can be a lenghty procedure however; it is better than doinh nothing. There is no cost. I believe that the form is called the employment standards form. Goood Luck. Brian.

I just purchased a one year membership last week. It cost me over $1,000. This is stressing me out so much. I feel like I want to kill myself. :-(

Hello Mark, Please be advised that the Soma Health and Fitness website is still live. I noticed that consumers can purchase Gift Certificates for Yoga, Massage, Gym or Personal Training. I am concerned that consumers may purchase gift certificates online. The website gives the impression that Soma is still operating as gym. Regards, Christine
