Construction on a significant element of the city’s $2.1-billion light-rail project officially began on Friday.

Local federal and provincial politicians joined Mayor Jim Watson to celebrate the beginning of work on the 2.5-kilometre tunnel that will run underneath downtown.
The Confederation Line project, which the city expects will be the first leg of a larger transit system, will eventually bring 12 kilometres of light-rail from the west of downtown to the east.
Mr. Watson and others each placed a “tooth” on the “road header” that will bore the hole for the tunnel, according to a City of Ottawa news release.
The city announced this week plans to spend up to $2.5 billion to expand rail into other parts of Ottawa by 2023, once the Confederation Line project is completed.
