The average commute in Ottawa is still not fast enough for many local workers despite being roughly at the national average, according to a new survey conducted by Environics Research Group and commissioned by Oxford Properties.

According to the study, titled “Destination Collaboration: The Future of Work,” 61 per cent of respondents in Ottawa travel less than 30 minutes to get to work.

Another 31 per cent reported that that their one-way commute is between 31 and 60 minutes, helping to make Ottawa’s average commute time roughly equal to the national average of 29 minutes.

Residents of Calgary and Edmonton, at an average of 27 minutes, had shorter commutes. People in Vancouver (33 minutes), Montreal (36 minutes) and Toronto (42 minutes) had longer commutes.

Even so, only 51 per cent of respondents in Ottawa said their commute was “reasonable,” a lower figure than the 79 per cent who said that being “within a reasonable commute” is important to them.

The survey also revealed some other information about how Ottawa residents work. About 61 per cent said their workplace is open concept, compared to 28 per cent who said they have private offices.

Ottawa residents, at 39 per cent, are also more likely to have high walled cubicles than workers in other cities.

And despite advances in technology, the survey found that many workers still collaborate face-to-face.

According to the survey, 79 per cent of respondents defined collaboration as working together in person, with 48 per cent of the respondents in Ottawa saying the collaborate more than they did five years ago.

However 48 per cent said that a lack of appropriate spaces prevent them from collaborating with their colleagues.

Over 2,000 office workers in six cities were polled for the survey. In Ottawa there were 123 respondents.

Did they only survey centre town folks? The commute from the West or from the East to the centre of the city is 45 minutes to 2 hours on Senator Game Night. We only have one major east-west highway and that needs to change.
