The number of Ottawa residents collecting employment insurance benefits increased slightly in December, according to numbers released Thursday by Statistics Canada.
There were 7,240 people receiving EI during the month, a jump from 7,190 in November.
Year-over-year the number of recipients was static at 7,240.
In Gatineau the numbers remained the same from November to December at 3,420. The number of recipients fell from December 2012, when there were 3,730 people collecting benefits.
Nationally, Statistics Canada says 514,200 people were getting regular employment insurance benefits in December, little changed from November.
The agency says the number of beneficiaries has been relatively stable since May 2013, following a downward trend that began in the summer of 2009.
It says Saskatchewan and Alberta posted an increase in the number of people receiving regular EI benefits in December, while there were fewer beneficiaries in New Brunswick.
There was little change in the other provinces.
