Cineplex Entertainment (TSX:CGX) said on Monday that it’s planning to open a 10-screen theatre at the site before the end of the year.

The announcement puts to rest questions about who will move into theatre space at the redeveloped Lansdowne. Empire Theatres began construction on the theatre before announcing that it was getting out of the movie-screening business over the summer.

While Empire sold most of its theatres to Cineplex, the proposed Lansdowne location and the now-closed multiplex at the World Exchange Plaza were not part of the deal. At the time, a Cineplex executive told OBJ that the company had no plans to open a theatre at Lansdowne.

The new theatre will have three licensed “adults only” auditoriums where food and drinks - including alcohol - will be served directly to customers at their seats.

It will also feature a high tech theatre that will have a wall-to-wall screen and advanced surround sound. There will also be six standard auditoriums.

The facility, called the Cineplex Cinemas Lansdowne and VIP, will have 1,700 seats.

With the December closure of the World Exchange Plaza theatre, which was purchased by Landmark Cinemas, this will be the only chain movie theatre in central Ottawa.
