The number of Ottawa residents collecting employment insurance benefits rose in February, according to numbers Statistics Canada released on Thursday.
There were 7,030 people on employment insurance during the month, a jump from 6,940 in January.
That was a decrease, however, when compared to the year before. In February 2013 there were 7,320 people collecting benefits.
Nationally there were fewer people collecting employment insurance benefits than the year before.
Statistics Canada said there were 506,500 people collecting employment insurance during the month, a 4.9 per cent decline when compared to February 2013.
In the provinces, Quebec and Saskatchewan had more people collecting benefits while Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador had slight declines. The other provinces saw no change, according to Stats Can.
