EllisDon Corp. won a $7.5-million tender to construct the foundation for the new Horticulture Building location ($3.8 million), demolish the Coliseum Building ($600,000), excavate and remediate contaminated soil under and next to those buildings ($1.9 million), as well as other related work including the relocation of utilities ($1.2 million).
The second contract, valued at $6.5 million according to city documents, was awarded to CDS Building Movers to relocate the Horticulture Building ($5 million), set it up for re-use ($1.3 million), and relocate artwork and memorials from the site ($200,000).
EllisDon beat out PCL Construction Canada Inc. and Pomerleau, who were also pre-qualified vendors, for the contract which will begin in June and be completed by November.
The general contractor has previously completed projects including the Algonquin College Centre for Construction Excellence, the Baseline station tunnel and the Woodroffe Avenue pedestrian bridge. It is currently working on a $143-million contract from Public Works to rehabilitate the Wellington Building.
CDS Building Movers is a structural moving and consulting company specializing in preserving and recycling historically significant buildings and structures. It is expected to finish its contract at Lansdowne by March 2013.
The construction contracts were authorized by city council on May 9, just hours before it learned that the Friends of Lansdowne appeal citing city procurement violations had been struck down by the Ontario Court of Appeal.
The court process delayed the Lansdowne Partnership Plan's original construction schedule which slotted the stadium to be completed by June 2013. Now, construction won't be done until at least 2015, according to media reports.
