Mayor Jim Watson is set to limit any tax hikes in the 2014 budget to less than two per cent.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

City council was set to vote on the motion Wednesday after Mr. Watson added the matter to the agenda for the finance and economic development committee, which he chairs, at the last minute on Tuesday.

Mr. Watson has stuck to his campaign promise to keep tax increases to under 2.5 per cent during his more than two years as mayor.

However he said he’d like to limit that further because the consumer price index, a measure of how much Canadians have to pay for everyday items, has been increasing at a slower pace.
