The strength of global mobile money transactions has propelled Telepin Software to one million merchants on its customers' global networks, the Ottawa firm announced. The company also announced it has 132 million subscribers through mobile operator deployments in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Telepin, a privately held firm, releases few financial metrics. It recently announced deals in Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.

Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) will pay $233.9 million in cash to retire debentures it took out in an attempt to acquire Mosaid Technologies Inc. last year. At six per cent interest, debenture holders will receive $1,023.84 in cash for each principal amount of $1,000 held, the patent licensing firm stated. After Sterling Partners extended a "white knight" proposal of $46 per share, surpassing that of WiLAN's by four dollars, Mosaid went private in late December 2011.

Carleton University saw a 7.2 increase in applications from Ontario high school students through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, triple the provincial average of 2.4 per cent. Commerce, public affairs and policy management, engineering, science and computer science were among the top draws.

Texas-based Waste Management will deploy 25 compressed natural gas trucks in the national capital under the terms of an agreement with the City of Ottawa. The trucks are billed as producing 25-per-cent fewer gas emissions than conventional trucks, and as quieter than diesel engines. The firm will also construct a fuelling station in Stittsville.

BTI Systems opened a new U.S. headquarters in Littleton, Mass., just outside of Boston. The location, which will be a complement to the Ottawa-based data traffic manager's headquarters, will serve as a major customer briefing centre and also do packet technology development.
