Colin Doherty, Robert Fryer and David J. Smith are among the local businesspeople to recently accept new positions.

Colin Doherty has been named president and chief executive officer of BTI Systems. He has 25 years’ experience in the telecommunications industry, most recently as CEO at Arbor Networks.

Vocantas has appointed Robert Fryer as director of product development. Mr. Fryer brings 20 years’ management and product development experience.

David J. Smith has been appointed to the board of directors of International Datacasting Corp. Mr. Smith has had a 30-year career in technology and telecommunications in a variety of roles.

Kevin Barwin and Tara Azulay have co-founded Clariti Group Inc. Mr. Barwin was formerly general manager and partner at CareerJoy, while Ms. Azulay has experience at CareerJoy and Altis Human Resources.

HATS OFF

Gowlings was named Canadian Firm of the Year in three of the five practice area categories at the 2014 Managing Intellectual Property North America Awards. The firm also took home several other awards, including Outstanding Canada IP Practitioner for Anthony Creber, a partner and patent litigator in the Ottawa office.

Lydia N. Renton, the director of occupational hygiene and safety at WESA, has been named a distinguished fellow by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Ian Charlebois, the owner of RE/MAX Citywide Realty Inc., has been named one of REALTOR Magazine’s top 30 under 30. He is the first recipient from outside the United States to receive this distinction.

McMillan was honoured at Communicate magazine’s Transform Awards Europe, winning three awards, including a gold award for its 2013 rebranding of Unify (formerly Siemens Enterprise Communications).
