The 22,000-square-foot facility on Industrial Avenue in Alta Vista is the latest expansion for the growing retailer. In separate announcements earlier this year, Farm Boy also revealed plans to open stores in Orleans and in Kingston.
In an April speech to the city's business community, Farm Boy CEO Jeff York said the company positions itself as a fresh food retailer, rather than a grocery store.
As the population ages, he argued, the idea of big-box-store shopping becomes less appealing. People are more willing to go to smaller, more specialized stores that are clean, bright and feel like home, he said.
Prior to joining Farm Boy in 2009, Mr. York was president of discount retail chain Giant Tiger.
