Local volunteer group the Lord Stanley Memorial Monument Committee announced Monday the intersection is the planned site for a project honouring the Stanley Cup.
The monument was originally supposed to be placed close to the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex Drive. But concerns that planned construction in the area would delay the project too much forced the group to look for a new site. The group is targeting March 18, 2017 as an unveiling date for the monument, according to a press release from the group.
That will be 125 years to the day since Lord Stanley of Preston, Canada’s governor general at the time, donated the trophy so it could be awarded annually to the best hockey team in the country.
The group will hold a design competition to decide what the monument should look like, the release said.
