The Marriott Residence Inn Ottawa Airport, on Walkley Road, held its grand opening last week.
“The planning process was so arduous,” said Anand Aggarwal, one of the hotel’s owners.
He said that the hotel was originally intended to be part of the planned expansion of Ottawa’s light rail system in the early 2000s.
When that expansion was cancelled, plans “had to be revised,” he said
The 120-room hotel is the first stage of a four-building development. Mr. Aggarwal said a 110-unit condo tower “will be ready by the end of next year.”
The plan calls for a total of three condo towers, with approximately 400 units in total.
With plans for expanded rail network back on the agenda, Mr. Aggarwal said he’s hopeful the City of Ottawa will choose to build an O-Train station nearby.
In addition to Mr. Aggarwal, the hotel is owned by T.J. Sohal and Sonny Sohal, who own several other hotel properties.
“It’s very accessible,” said Mr. Aggarwal. “It’s like a gateway to Ottawa.”
