A Star Wars-themed travelling exhibition took home event of the year honours at the Ottawa Tourism Awards on Thursday evening.

Star Wars Identities beat out six other events, including the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival, the RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest and the Women’s World Hockey Championship, to take home the award, presented by Ottawa Tourism.

The show, developed by Montreal-based X3 Productions and held at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, is currently in Paris and has also been shown in Edmonton and Montreal.

The Tourism Volunteer of the Year award went to Daniel Laliberté, the General Manager of the Ottawa Marriott Hotel. Mr. Laliberté is a former chair of Ottawa Tourism’s board of directors and currently is on the organization’s Tourism Development Council.

He’s also held leadership roles with the Regroupement des gens d'affaires de la Capitale nationale, an organization for French-speaking businesspeople in the region and the Ottawa Gatineau Hotel Association.

The Tourism Leader of the Year award went to Mark Monahan, the founder and executive director of the RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest. Mr. Monahan was also one of the co-founders of Ottawa’s Festival Network and has served as the executive director of the Ottawa Folk Festival.

Also recognized were the Ottawa International Airport Authority, which won the Community Spirit Award; Calypso Theme Waterpark’s Kongo Expedition, which was named Innovation of the Year; Pumpkinferno, New Company of the Year; and The Haunted Walk’s “zombie adventure” at the Defenbunker, which was named partnership of the year.
