The network will serve a market of 180 million customers in 30 markets. Lucent is the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer worldwide, and will be the primary supplier of the infrastructure for SBC's networks. The companies announced the deal Tuesday.
SBC has about 12.2 million wireless phone subscribers in 24 states, and its combining its wireless operations with those of BellSouth. Other services include Internet access , cable TV, directories, paging, and security monitoring. SBC also has stakes in telecom operations in 23 countries worldwide.
