The little IT company that could

When Coreen Bouchard founded PureLogic IT in 2008, she was 29 years old and had never run a business before. She took her seven years of experience in the IT world and put together a company.

It was worth $2.5 million in just eight months.

"My experience in the marketplace led me to believe that I could do something different and better and more client-focused," the PureLogic CEO says.

Four years after its launch, the value-added IT reseller is OBJ's Fastest Growing Company, and it's all because PureLogic's office has gone to the dogs, according to Ms. Bouchard.

Its Kanata location consists of 10 humans and two dogs - a half-lab, half-retriever named Connor and a Portuguese water dog called Caio.

Connor belongs to Ms. Bouchard and her husband Dave, who is PureLogic's general manager after fairly and competently passing through the company's hiring procedure.

The result is an office with a family feel that is beneficial to employers and clients alike, Ms. Bouchard says.

"I think it sets a tone," she says. "We work really hard, but we can always have fun and enjoy a good work-life balance."

Ms. Bouchard founded the company with a long-term focus to allow it to continue to grow and differentiate itself.

"Our industry changes quickly with technology, and you have to change to stay on top of that," she says. "If you don't, there will be somebody else who will be able to do it better, faster, quicker, stronger."

The company's client list includes approximately 25 federal and provincial government departments, among them the Department of National Defence. Other clients come from the commercial technology sector and are mainly in Ottawa, but stretch across Canada.

"We ship from Ottawa to Newfoundland to Nunavut to Vancouver Island," Ms. Bouchard says.

PureLogic offers various hardware, software and services to protect businesses' information and data.

IT partnerships include industry leaders such as Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems Inc., IBM, Toshiba Corp., Dell Computer Corp. and Microsoft.

Other specialized services include energy monitoring and Energy Star-rated hardware that reduces clients' energy consumption by as much as 50 per cent annually, according to PureLogic.

But what has been the real key to the company's success is its core team and its focus on integrity, Ms. Bouchard said.

"It's always been a ‘we' attitude," she said. "It's reflected in our executive management team, our attitudes towards our clients and our support of each other."
