From UNIX to the cloud

The oldest firm on this year's list of Fastest Growing Companies, TeraMach Technologies' business model has significantly evolved over the past 16 years.

Enterprise Unix , Telesat Canada , Mosaid Technologies , Toronto , Ontario

When the company was founded, it was dedicated to a single vendor and focused on one piece of technology - enterprise Unix servers, recalls TeraMach chief operating officer Darlene Kelly.

During the next decade and a half, the company added storage options, followed by virtualization and networking technology.

Today, TeraMach designs custom IT solutions through its professional service offerings and by reselling hardware and software from tier-one vendors.

Ms. Kelly says customers are increasingly demanding multi-vendor solutions, in part to avoid being locked into a single supplier's technology.

"It is not committing to just one (vendor). It is the best solution," she says.

TeraMach entered the cloud computing space approximately three years ago and has since seen its revenues nearly double.

While the company has several well-known local private-sector clients, including Telesat Canada and Mosaid Technologies, it is primarily focused on the public sector, particularly with the federal government.

It recently used that experience to start winning business with Queen's Park. Last September, TeraMach opened an office in Toronto and has since secured several provincial "vendor of record" agreements, which are essentially contracts between the Ontario government and suppliers for commonly used goods, services and IT licenses.

(Toronto) is a very competitive market, but we’ve been very successful in winning (contracts). - Chief operating officer Darlene Kelly

"(Toronto) is a very competitive market, but we've been very successful in winning (contracts)," says Ms. Kelly.

Even though the provincial and federal governments are both forecasting spending reductions for the foreseeable future, Ms. Kelly says TeraMach can help its public-sector clients adjust.

"While a lot of people are viewing it as a tremendous challenge, we're viewing it as an opportunity to find new ways to support our key clients with solutions and technology that they require to achieve their new objective."
