"We are very excited to reach this incredible milestone in such a short period of time," said Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, in a statement. "It’s a testament to the ease and simplicity of our system that helps both large and small businesses succeed online every day."
Shopify, whose founding company Jaded Pixel was named an OBJ Startup To Watch in 2007, provides online retail store platforms for more than 6,000 businesses in Canada and internationally. It is used by brands such as the Foo Fighters, Tesla Motors and The Indianapolis Star newspaper.
The company earns revenue by charging a transaction fee on purchases as well as levying various levels of subscription fees.
The company also recently launched its "Build a Business" contest, which will award $100,000 to the highest grossing new business launched on its platform between January 1 and June 30.
