Ottawa biological sample firm DNA Genotek will have one of its products extensively used in a South African study for tuberculosis prevention, the company announced on Thursday.

Topics :
South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative , Oragene-DNA Self Collection Kits

The study by the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) will examine the genetic differences between babies who are inoculated against TB against those that are not.

Around 6,000 samples will be collected using Genotek's Oragene-DNA Self Collection Kits, which are able to keep the DNA at a consistent temperature even in remote locations.

The value of the four-year contract, which will be deployed in a 12,000-km region of sub-Saharan African that has a high rate of TB, was not disclosed.

DNA Genotek was one of Ottawa's fastest-growing companies this past year, and in May its kits were selected for a United Kingdom bone-marrow registry study.
