The news came a day after WiLAN revealed a broader, $5.9 million net loss in Q2 2010, compared with the same quarter last year, due to an increase in litigation expenses to $6.8 million from $4 million in the same period.
WiLAN initiated legal action in an Eastern Texas court on June 19, 2008 against several major handset suppliers, claiming they had infringed two patents: 5,282,222 and RE37,802.
A few weeks later, UTStarcom sold off a subsidiary – UTStarcom Personal Communications LLC – to Personal Communications Devices Holdings LLC.
WiLAN then added the remaining part of UTStarcom, Personal Communications Devices LLC, to its litigation list.
WiLAN has also settled with Research In Motion Ltd. under the same patents disputes, but has outstanding litigation against LG Electronics Mobilecomm USA Inc., Motorola Inc. and PCD.
In a statement, WiLAN added it has reached agreements with 11 handset makers and 99 companies. Recent cases completed included disputes against Nokia and Samsung.
