Taxpayers are giving $240,000 to OCRI’s global marketing program, officials announced Thursday. The sum is being matched by a $180,000 municipal grant, as well as additional OCRI funds and private donations.

“Over the past two years we have used these funds to aggressively promote the Ottawa brand internationally,” said Michael Darch, OCRI’s executive director of global marketing, in a statement.

He says his concentration has been on the information communications technology and clean technology sectors.

As a result of OCRI’s efforts, Mr. Darch said there have been 131 news stories printed or broadcast in trade and business media as a result of the economic development organization’s “aggressive public relations program.”

The $240,000 matching grant came from The Government of Canada’s Invest Canada-Community Initiatives (ICCI) program. The City of Ottawa pitched in the amount reported above and OCRI has committed to raising $60,000 from private sources in order for the full $240,000 federal grant to be matched. The total available to OCRI is then actually: $480,000.
