SpotOn Systems acquired by Esri

SpotOn Systems, an Ottawa-based firm that integrates maps into IBM Cognos business intelligence applications, has been acquired by Calif.-based Esri.

SpotOn develops software that integrates maps and data from Esri's geographic information system software into IBM Cognos business intelligence. This enables users to analyze business information using interactive maps.

By acquiring SpotOn, Esri's spatial analytics, maps and data can be united with IBM Cognos's business intelligence mapping capabilities.

Esri uses GIS technology to allow users to address business, social, environmental issues.

"By making it easy to unite Esri's spatial analytics, data, and maps with IBM Cognos (business intelligence), SpotOn ... provides the analytic element that has been missing to business users," Esri said in a statement.

In 2009, SpotOn won the IBM CTO Innovation Award for its Vantage product.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
