Eight locally headquartered companies were named to the Profit 200 2012 list, a third less than the 12 firms posted in 2011.
Only one firm, Wi-LAN Technologies Inc., made it into the top 10 per cent as opposed to two firms last year.
Repeat entrants from 2011 dominated this year's list, with most of the companies slipping in the rankings relative to last year.
Among major Canadian urban areas, Ottawa tied with Edmonton with the lowest number of firms on the list, at four per cent. Toronto dominated the rankings with about 37 per cent of companies coming from that region, followed by Vancouver (15 per cent) and Montreal (13 per cent).

115 - PlaSmart Inc. (394 per cent) -- down from #48 in 2011
179 - Thermal Energy International Inc. (241 per cent)
183 - Pythian Group Inc. (237 per cent) -- down from #171 in 2011
