Public Works will work with 20 Canadian companies to buy and test their new innovations through the Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program, the department announced Thursday.

The program involves Public Works matching new innovations with the right government departments to test them.

"We are proud to partner with Canadian businesses to get new products and services from the lab to the marketplace," stated Public Works minister Rona Ambrose in a press release. "A kick-start like this can help create homegrown success stories across the country."

Launched in 2010, CICP has already helped multiple Ottawa companies to secure contracts with the federal government. The program was initially launched as a $40-million pilot project, but was made permanent in the 2012 budget with the pledge of an additional $95 million over three years starting in 2013-14, and $40 million each year after.

CICP currently targets innovation in environment, safety and security, health and enabling technologies. Later iterations of the program will also include a military procurement component.

Wow, more corporate wellfare going to companies with money who should be able to survive without taking taxpayer's hard earned money. If they can't survive without our tax payer's money, then does capitalism not need this company to fail? should we not be building companies who are strong and not eager to take hand outs like they need help? I've worked my ass off for the last 10 years building a high tech company on my own, without harassing my peers for money. Who decides where the money goes, and to be fair, should the $40 million not be split amongst ALL high tech companies here in ottawa, specially the ones who have shown a profit? What a scam. You're all sheep. I guess that's why I can earn a living on my own, and most of you can't, including our so-called entrepreneurs and business leaders. What a joke.
