Patent licenser Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN) has commenced litigation against Toshiba Corp., the Ottawa company said in a statement.

WiLAN is claiming patent infringement in relation to two patents (No. 6,359,654 and 7,034,889) that have to do with digital television and display technology.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

In separate cases, WiLAN filed claims in early October against Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent concerning wireless intellectual property.

The company saw its litigation expenses rise in its latest quarterly results, when WiLAN posted a net loss of $100,000.

WiLAN says it licenses intellectual property to more than 260 firms across the world and has doubled the size of its patent portfolio this year.
