Google has announced Ottawa-based Shopify is one of four e-commerce and website-building providers helping the company develop its new domain registration service.
In a statement released earlier this week, Google said a “small number of people” will “kick the tires” on the domain registration service, called Google Domains.
Shopify has declined comment on its role until the middle of next month, but Google’s statement said the testing process will give “a small group of people” the ability to buy and transfer website domain names and then tell Google how the experience went.
Google said it wants to make buying, finding, transferring and managing a domain a “simple and transparent experience,” with flawless customer service and all the right additional features.
It says it is working with Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly and Wix.com to ensure that happens, and that it hopes to have Google Domains more widely available soon.
