The 2021 AFP Ottawa Philanthropy Awards – commonly known as the “Phils” – are making a triumphant return November 10, bringing honourees and guests together in-person for the first time in nearly two years.

The annual awards ceremony recognizes extraordinary philanthropic efforts within the Ottawa community, both by individuals and companies alike. The various awards recognize the contribution of philanthropists, volunteers, youth, businesses, and corporate partners in the city – an especially important group to recognize during such turbulent times, says Peter Nicholson, president and founder of The Foundation WCPD – title sponsor of the Phils.

“The Phils are so important to our city because they bring us all together and acknowledge those that make a difference in our community,” says Nicholson. “But beyond that, I am so pleased that this year marks our return to an in-person element for the Phils, where we can all be together safely and responsibly.”

Celebrations this year will be held at the National Arts Centre and will be in accordance with all public health guidelines. Guests will be able to participate in a masked networking session before sitting down for a meal, followed by the awards ceremony.

For those who can’t make it to the in-person gathering, the event will also be live-streamed for free on AFP’s website to enjoy from the comfort of home.

“As a sector, we rely so tremendously on the passion and energy of many volunteers. The same can be said for the amazing individuals that work in the philanthropic sector in Ottawa,” says Laura Scaffidi, associate development officer, major gifts at the National Arts Centre Foundation – who is co-chairing the 2021 Phils with her colleague Shelagh Connolly development officer, events and stewardship at the NAC Foundation. “Many communities have been in desperate need of support over the last year and a half, and everyone in this sector has been working tirelessly through the pandemic. The Phils give us an important moment to pause and appreciate the people and companies that make Ottawa a better place for everyone.”

A monumental return

This year marks the 27th year that the Ottawa chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and its volunteers, sponsors and supporters, have hosted the celebration of philanthropy in Ottawa.

The return to an in-person event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from local sponsors, such as WCPD, who has supported the event for the past seven years.

“Saying yes all those years ago was easy,” adds Nicholson. “While Foundation WCPD is a national company, Ottawa is our home.”

This year's awards sponsors include: BMR Group, Accora Village, OBJ, CityNews, Brazeau Sellers, Emond Harnden, The Zed Family and RBC.

The awards represent the very best of the charitable sector and are a celebration of service, hope and commitment in this evolving year.
